Product Reviews:
I've been carrying around SLRs for nearly thirty years, and enjoy lived with the limitations of neck straps. Even using the under-the-arm approach the camera still bounces while hiking, and leaves your neck stiff after hours of use. Harnesses to reduce nouns strain have come and gone, but were never convenient to use. When I saw good reviews for the Cotton Carrier I decided to try it, but didn't enjoy my hopes up.
Well, this system really works. The vest is great for hiking. It holds the camera steady but easy to access, and takes all the strain off the collar. The only down side is that you might seem a bit unstylish out in public with it. But next there's the holster. Put the camera on your belt and you have it at hand with no strain on your neck. You look serious roughly speaking your photography without too much geek factor. I used the holster for two weeks on vacation, and will never go back to sagging a camera around my neck. (I usually used a long neck strap as a backup, but had it loose so the weight be carried by the holster.)
The difference between the "Regular"* and the "Pro-Pac" is that the "Regular" comes with flat inserts (the piece that attaches to the camera and slips into the vest or holster) while the "Pro-Pac" also includes wedge-shaped inserts. The purpose of the wedge-shaped inserts is to angle a heavy or large camera/lens combination away from your body. I've used both, and the flat inserts are more comfortable for moderate-sized cameras; use the wedge inserts single if you need to. By the way, you can get inserts alone from the manufacturer, so if you necessitate more or a different type you don't need to buy a new get-up.
I'm about 2500 shots into this system, and I'm not giving it up!
* "Cotton Carrier" Complete Camera System for Regular Cameras
The Cotton Carrier system is short a doubt the VERY best way to carry your camera when engaged in helpful pursuits. There are several videos available to demonstrate and explain this product and I have found it works exactly as described.
I am usually carrying a Canon 5D, Mark II with a 100-400m, "L" lens and another "L" lens of some sort. The weight of the camera and lens is fairly heavy, but this system distributes the weight so effectively that it is no burden at all.
I recently used it hiking/rock climbing contained by the Lake Tahoe area with WONDERFUL results.
Then, last week I used it while pheasant hunting in MN. It be awesome. I was able to "sling" my shotgun and use the camera without any problem.
The Cotton Carrier is very very well made and durable. The system works exactly as advertised. I've now purchased another for Christmas for a friend.
You will NOT be disappointed!
Pros: I purchased this product yesterday and used it this evening with a two-camera setup (Canon 7Ds with flashes, L-series lenses, and two monopods mounted on the lens-rings.) As advertise, it takes the weight completely off of your shoulders and you don't fatigue the way you would if you be slinging them off of your shoulders or your neck. I plan to continue using this product -- it appears to be ridiculously well made, beside plenty of Velcro adjustability. I don't see anyway that you could possibly lose your gear wearing this.
Cons: Prior to tonight, I wore a vest and had a camera strap on either shoulder. I'd then wear a jacket over the vest for warmth. Most times things be relatively well concealed and close to my person -- Tonight, I had three separate people voice "So you're the cameraman eh?". This is an obvious cameraman rig, and you will not wear it into discrete locations without looking quite obvious
If you put a flash on your 2nd camera (on the side holster), it holds it a bit far from your body. I be making a conscience effort not to bump into people/things.
Suggestions:
There are mounts for two cameras, and that's it -- no room for extra batteries, a water bottle, etc... If you like have extra batteries/lenses/etc...you'll need a belt to go with this setup.
Functional Yet Mad Max-like
This product definitely works as advertised. However, be aware that you will look like someone out of the Mad Max movie wearing this.
Just what he needed
My husband always carry around a lot of camera equipment for weddings and other events. The other equipment he had was cumbersome and made it hard to achieve to his different...
